Statement

I enjoy working and experimenting with a diversity of media, including charcoal, ink, mixed media, watercolour, etching and printing. I wish to continue to experiment with new and different media at university and ‘develop as a visual communicator’. I am interested in a wide range of areas, including observational drawing, book making, printing, narrative and animation.  During my foundation course at UCA Maidstone I have learnt to work without inhibitions and for my ideas and concepts to be ambitious, and in doing so have developed a greater understanding of art and design. I specifically enjoyed working on our Chicken Project, as it gave me vast freedom to develop as an illustrator by trying out new and interesting techniques. Lectures have given me the opportunity to expand my knowledge of techniques, concepts and artists. My exposure to professionally practicing artists and designers has been invaluable.  For example, Chris Dobrowolski’s lecture entitled ‘Landscape, Seascape, Skyscape, Escape’, the presentation and his work was informal and witty, which I found engaging and inspirational.  I look forward to carrying forward and developing what I have learnt so far on foundation, at MMU.
At MMU, I would like to develop both traditional and digital skills, learn more about animation and using programmes such as Adobe Illustrator, inDesign and iMovie. The course will assist me to continue to expand my knowledge through the university’s provided resources.  I live in London where there are great creative means such as museums and galleries which I draw inspiration from.  I know Manchester also offers these same essential features and, like London, is one of the hubs of contemporary art and design in the UK.  I hope to gain from these features, and be challenged and learn from my peers, so I can prepare myself for the professional environment.

Fashion Illustration / Final Outcome

Using Indian Ink, emulsion and image transfer, we had to create a piece based on the garment that we made using papers on a mannequin.

"Chicken Nuggets Project" / Observational Drawings

"Chicken Nuggets" Project / Sketchbook Work

After sketching real chickens, we had to create illustrations from our observational drawings.

Experimental Self Portrait / Final Outcome

Using different media, we had to draw self portraits using touch to feel out the features. I used inks, berol pens, water, charcoal and emulsion.

Fashion Illustration / Observation Drawing

"Chicken Nuggets" Project / Page From Final Outcome

We were asked to listen to a radio clip about chickens, one of the things covered in the clip was cock fighting. This is a page from a miniature book I made, called "Cocknapped", about a cockeral that gets kidnapped and thrown into the world of cock fighting.

Deconstruction and Reconstruction / Sketchbook Work

We were asked to choose an illustrator and then deconstruct their work, taking aspects of the artists style mixed with our own to create new illustrations.

Fashion Illustration / Dress Designs

We were asked to create a garment on a mannequin, out of paper and tissue paper, and then asked to come up with 3 different looks based on the original. I chose this piece because I specifically like the mark making on the dresses.

Experimental Book Project / Sami People / Sketchbook Work

Life Drawing / 2 Minute Sketches

The 2 minute sketches were so that we could explore the movement of the human body.

Life Drawing / 15 Minute Sketches

For these drawings we were asked to pay particular attention to the hands and feet.

Amsterdam / Sketchbook Work

The brief for Amsterdam was to create a sketchbook accounting our experieces and the culture of Amsterdam.
